              Staying Sober

How often have you stopped using or drinking, only to start doing so again? If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Behavioral change does not come easy.

​

With Sober Living app, you are never alone. Its menus help you track change and share it with real people in real time. The key here is to make change incrementally - so each complete task bolsters your confidence and self-esteem - and energizes you to take another step. Here's some tips -

Set Goals -

​

You know that what you expect to happen affects what you do. Setting a clear goal each day can motivate you toward achieving that goal by nightfall. Don't let a missed day stop you from accomplishing your goals - keep going. 

​

Reflect and Accept -

 

Take time out to reflect - there is a better way. You are not your addiction. Acceptance gives you confidence that you can do this. You are not alone. But be gentle with yourself and know that a  bad day or two will not ruin your journey.

​

Take A Step Every Day -

​

To begin, pick one thing you're not doing and start doing it. Some steps will resonate more with you than others - those are the ones to pick. For now you need not believe in God - or even a Higher Power. You only have to commit to change. Set your reminders so you never forget an appointment or meeting.

Meditate and Pray Frequently -

​

Are there times when you feel stressed? or need solace? Just tap Prayers tab - and listen to a favorite prayer, meditation, or poem - close your eyes, breathe deeply, share it with someone. Does listening make you feel better?

​

Take Stock -

​

Taking a moral inventory  may seem weird to you - you don't need to do this. But it has been shown that correcting old bad behavior is the best way to bring an accountability partner into your program.

​

Be Accountable -

​

Show your sponsor that you are using your app every day. Share with your counselors your timeline. The rock of accountability can provide a touchstone for you. Working with an accountability partner will encourage you to keep on track.

​

Confront Your Defects -

​

Personal defects can be overcome by the right signals - the more you feel good signals, the less you feel the bad ones. Maybe the bad signals are still there, but you are not feeling it. If you can remove one defect you can change others as well.

 

Stay Motivated -

​

If you have made the commitment, even if your program misses the bullseye, stick with it. Maybe scale back a bit. Seek progress not perfection. Endure. You can do it. More to the point - you are worth it. 

​

Consequences -

​

Maybe you thought you can drink or use without consequences? But take it from those who hit bottom, regardless of where you are in your tendencies,, someday you are going to screw up big time. Think about how these consequences affects those you love and the life you want for yourself.

​

Journal -

​

Keeping a journal of your thinking is a simple but powerful exercise. Sober app gives you lots of ways to get it out of your head and put it all down in words - even prompting you to consider any corrective measures that may need to happen. 

​

Review Nightly -

​

Review each day before you retire - what was working for you?  did you feel old cravings? do you act less selfishly, dishonestly, fearfully? are you spending less time feeling sorry for yourself? do you function better even though you have so much going on? 

​

Reset Button -

​

Turning your life around is hard work. You may fail before you succeed. That's not only okay, but perfectly natural. It may be the only way to learn. Relapse isn't even the right word for it. It's learning,- and learning takes time and persistence. You mayl stumble but you can get up again, and the only thing you shouldn't be is hard on yourself. The way to sobriety is littered with stumbles and cancels, wrong turns and dead ends. Each time you slip, you're one step closer to living the life you deserve.
